Stop Payment Quick Reference

TD Business Central lets you place stop payment orders on individual cheques, cheque ranges and pre-authorized debits directly from the dashboard. Single cheque stops cost $12.50. Range stops are $15.00. EFT recalls run $25.00. Orders take effect immediately for unpresented cheques and remain active for 6 months. Success rates are highest when stops are placed before the cheque enters the clearing system. Real-time status tracking and automatic renewal reminders keep your stop orders current.

A cheque sent to the wrong vendor. A stolen chequebook. A duplicate payment that needs to be blocked. Stop payment orders give you direct control over which cheques clear your account — and which ones do not. TD Business Central makes the process immediate, trackable and fully auditable.

Cheque Stop Payment Orders

Block individual cheques or entire cheque ranges from clearing your account. Instant confirmation, real-time tracking.

Single Cheque Stops

Enter the cheque number, account, amount and payee name. TD Business Central confirms the stop order instantly. If the cheque has not yet been presented for clearing, the stop is virtually guaranteed to succeed. The order remains active for 6 months. You will receive a reminder 30 days before expiry with the option to renew.

Single stops are the most common use case. A vendor receives a replacement cheque and you need to block the original. A cheque was issued in the wrong amount. An employee left the company and their final expense reimbursement cheque needs to be reissued. Each of these scenarios requires a fast, reliable stop order.

The Bills of Exchange Act (Canada) provides the legal framework for stop payment orders on negotiable instruments. TD Business Central's stop payment functionality operates within this legislative framework, providing businesses with the legal right to countermand payment on uncleared cheques.

Cheque Range Stops

Lost or stolen chequebooks require blocking an entire sequence of cheque numbers. Enter the starting and ending numbers and TD Business Central blocks every cheque in that range. The fee is a flat $15.00 regardless of how many cheques are covered. This is significantly cheaper than placing individual stops on 50 or 100 cheque numbers.

Range stops also apply when a business closes an account and wants to ensure no outstanding cheques clear after closure. Combined with Positive Pay fraud protection, range stops create a comprehensive defence against unauthorized cheque clearing.

EFT Recalls and Pre-Authorized Debit Cancellations

Stop payments are not limited to cheques. TD Business Central also handles EFT recall requests and PAD cancellations.

EFT recall requests are submitted when an electronic funds transfer was sent in error — wrong amount, wrong recipient, duplicate payment. TD Business Central initiates the recall through the Payments Canada network. The receiving financial institution is notified and asked to return the funds. Success depends on whether the recipient's account still holds the funds; the receiving bank cannot force a return if the account has insufficient balance.

The recall window is tight. Under Payments Canada rules, EFT recalls must be initiated within specific timeframes depending on the transaction type. For standard EFT payments, the recall request must be filed within 10 business days of the value date. Acting quickly improves recovery odds significantly.

Set up transaction alerts to catch erroneous payments early. The sooner you identify a mistake, the sooner you can initiate a recall, and the higher the probability of recovery.

Pre-authorized debit (PAD) cancellations stop a recurring debit from being drawn on your account. If you have terminated a service agreement but the vendor continues debiting, a PAD cancellation blocks future withdrawals. This is separate from contacting the vendor directly — it provides bank-level protection.

Under the Payments Canada PAD rules, businesses have specific rights to dispute unauthorized debits. TD Business Central facilitates the dispute process and manages the paperwork. For PAD debits processed without valid authorization, indemnity claims can recover funds even after the standard return window has closed.

All stop payment orders, EFT recalls and PAD cancellations are logged in the account audit trail. Export the history for compliance documentation or internal controls review.

Processing Windows and Timing Considerations

Timing determines success. Place your stop order before the cheque enters clearing for maximum effectiveness.

The Canadian cheque clearing cycle typically takes 1 to 2 business days from presentation to settlement. During that window, the payee's bank images the cheque, transmits the data through the payments clearing system and requests funds from the drawer's bank. A stop payment order is most effective before the cheque enters this pipeline.

TD Business Central processes stop orders in real time. The moment you confirm the order, the cheque number is flagged in the clearing system. If the cheque is presented after the stop is placed, it will be returned unpaid. If the cheque was presented before the stop but has not yet settled, the outcome depends on where the item sits in the clearing queue.

For time-critical situations — such as discovering a large cheque was mailed to the wrong address — placing the stop immediately through TD Business Central is faster than calling the support line. The online process takes under 60 seconds. Do it first, then follow up with whatever else needs to happen.

EFT recalls operate on a different timeline. Because electronic payments settle faster than cheques, the recall window is tighter. Standard EFT payments can be recalled within 10 business days of the value date. After that window closes, recovery requires direct negotiation with the recipient or legal action.

Pre-authorized debit cancellations take effect on the next business day. If a PAD is scheduled to hit your account tomorrow and you cancel today, it will be blocked. If today's PAD has already been processed, the cancellation applies to the next occurrence. For previously processed unauthorized PADs, file an indemnity claim for recovery. TD Business Central tracks the entire timeline and sends status updates at each stage.

Yes. TD Business Central supports cheque range stops. This is commonly used when a chequebook is lost or stolen and you need to prevent all remaining cheques from being cashed.
